OUR FREE PHOTOGRAPHY CONTEST RECOMMENDATION OF THE DAY! The Mitford Museum is hosting its annual photography contest in honor of founder Jan Karon’s daughter and professional photographer, Candace Freeland.
U.S. photographers up to the age of 18 are invited to enter black and white photos based on the theme: My Family. “At the age of 16, I was handed a clunky Hanimex Praktika camera and exposed my first roll of Tri-X film. My passion for the medium grew as I discovered the work of the photo-journalism masters: W. Eugene Smith, Henri Cartier Bresson, and Dorothea Lange. They were concerned photographers…with an eye attuned to those who suffer the snares of war and poverty.” Inspired by their legacies, Candace went on to launch an award-winning photojournalism career, which included work with the Associated Press; the Charlotte Observer, US News and World Report, the New York Times, the Washington Post, and other leading journals. Her photo exhibitions included Forced Out—The Agony of the Refugee in Our Time, sponsored by Amnesty International, and The Concerned Photographer, sponsored by the International Center of Photography. Candace later moved to Hawaii, where she documented more than a thousand weddings, and later to a final residence in her beloved North Carolina mountains. The highlight of her life as a photographer was a letter in her early career from W. Eugene Smith (1918–1978), often described as the single most important photographer in the development of the editorial photo essay. “Your photographs,” he wrote, “are quite remarkable. I truly believe you can be a magnificent and honest photographic …contributor to humanity.” Candace gave the founding gift for the Candace Freeland Photography of Excellence Award. The Mitford Museum is honored to carry forth her legacy of encouragement to young photographers through this heartfelt outreach to youth.

OUR FREE PHOTOGRAPHY CONTEST RECOMMENDATION OF THE DAY! The Shin-Kong Mitsukoshi International Photography Exhibition has been held since 2007 with the aim of providing a stage for photographers to show their talent. Unlike most competitions, this event allows participants to decide their own photographic themes and tell a visual story with five images. Beyond a test of photographic technique, this approach also challenges the artists’ subject selection, conceptual clarity, and communication ability. In addition to the prizewinners receiving generous awards, the prize-winning works will be displayed in a touring exhibition shown at Shin-Kong Mitsukoshi department stores in northern, central, and southern Taiwan, enabling even more people to appreciate the photographers’ visual stories.

Grand Prize winner: $2,500. Category winners: $500 Readers' Choice winner: $500 OUR FREE PHOTOGRAPHY CONTEST RECOMMENDATION OF THE DAY! A single image can be burned into one's soul so that it is never forgotten. A video of only a few seconds in length can be shared around the world to create a new trend. In this age when digital technology and social networking platforms have become so popular and anyone can communicate as an artist, the possibilities for imaging expression are expanding without end.
In holding the Nikon Photo Contest yet again, we at Nikon are looking for works that use the power of imaging to appeal to others. This Contest has been held since 1969. That's roughly half a century promoting a vision of supporting creators who influence others through the global language of imaging, regardless of their age, nationality, or background. We hope to provide a place where like-minded artists who seriously pursue imaging expression can acknowledge, inspire, and challenge one another. This year's Contest will be comprised of a photo competition and a short film competition. The theme for the Open category in both competitions is "Connect". In today's society, images have become a familiar means of communication with billions of photos and videos shared via the Internet every day. It can be said that we humans are searching for new, never-before-seen ways to bond and communicate. Therefore, we are looking for entries in the Open category that express the connections artists feel now in their own unique ways. The theme for the Next Generation category open to artists aged 25 years old and younger is "Passion". Passion has the power to stimulate people's feelings, create empathy, and change the future. We are looking for entries in the Next Generation category that convey the passion young artists feel in and around themselves through images. Our goal with this Contest is to share the new value of imaging with more people as we pursue imaging's ultimate potential. We want artists to express their inner creativity through images and inspire emotion and courage in others as we head into the future together. Grand Prize *1No. of Winners:1 per competition, total 2
