"Minimalism" 2025 THEME WINNERS

The Minimalism Photography Competition invites photographers to celebrate the power of simplicity by capturing images that embrace clean lines, intentional composition, and thoughtful use of negative space. Participants are challenged to create striking visuals using minimal elements—whether found in nature, architecture, everyday objects, or abstract scenes—while emphasizing clarity, balance, and restraint. The competition rewards photographs that demonstrate how less can truly be more, showcasing the beauty of quiet moments, subtle details, and refined design. Open to all skill levels, it offers artists a platform to highlight their ability to distill a scene to its essential form and evoke meaning through elegant simplicity.

The selection guidelines for the Minimalism Photography Competition focus on clarity, simplicity, and strong visual intent. Judges will look for images that skillfully use negative space, clean composition, and limited elements to create a powerful and cohesive statement. Successful entries should demonstrate deliberate framing, thoughtful balance, and an ability to evoke emotion or meaning through restraint rather than complexity. While post-processing is permitted, it should enhance the minimalist aesthetic without introducing distractions. All submissions must reflect the photographer’s original work and adhere to the competition’s core theme of distilling a scene to its most essential, impactful form.

Our First Place Winner was submitted by
Yoshiki Nakamura from Seattle, Washington

I am a nature and wildlife photographer based in Seattle. My goal in photography is to create images that resemble paintings. While creating an excellent painting can take hours or even years, a photograph can be captured with just one click of the shutter. This is what fascinates and motivates me, and I have been photographing for over 20 years. Recently, I was invited to delve into wildlife photography, which has become even more captivating and inspiring, as it reveals a world where the cycle of life and death unfolds every moment. During this new journey, I discovered that 3S (Slow Shutter Speed) shooting is an incredibly effective tool for making my photos look like paintings—not only because of its painterly appearance but also because each image tells its own story. I believe this effect occurs because The camera's image sensor accumulates photons for 100 to 300 times longer compared to typical high-shutter-speed shooting.

Our Second Place Winner was submitted by
Marian Plaino from Bucuresti, Romania

I first picked up a camera in 1997, at 23, while still a student. What began as a way to document the beauty of my travels soon evolved into a lifelong visual journey. For years, I explored photography alongside my work as a math teacher — using it in playful, creative ways with pupils and, later, developing a souvenir business with my wife based on my images.

In recent years, I’ve shifted my focus more intentionally toward photography. What was once passion is now purpose. I’ve expanded from landscapes to portraiture, rural life, events, and street scenes — seeking to tell honest stories through natural light and unposed moments.
I don’t chase perfection. I wait for presence. I believe photography is a visual language — one that speaks through emotion, light, and the quiet power of a captured moment. Each frame is not just what I see, but what I feel, and how I remember the world in that brief breath of time.
In 2016 I started to "test" my photos in international and national photo contests. Until now I have counted more than 650 prizes in about 60 countries, 5 trophies, and 11 times “Best Author”..
