About Think Tank Photo
Think Tank Photo is a group of designers and professional photographers focused on studying how photographers work, and developing inventive new carrying solutions to meet their needs. By focusing on “speed” and “accessibility,” we prepare photographers to Be Ready “Before The Moment,” allowing them to document those historic moments that reflect their personal visions and artistic talents. For some companies, it is only about the product. For us, it is more: It is about supporting photographers doing their job. If we can design products that help photographers travel easier, take pictures faster, and organize their gear more efficiently, then we will have accomplished something beyond the bags themselves. Think Tank”, which is defined as an idea producing organization, perfectly describes Think Tank Photo’s company culture and mission of creating inventive new carrying solutions. Think Tank has created a string of inventions since 2005 unmatched by their competitors. Proofing Galleries Create public or private galleries that work on any device. Mobile Apps Custom digital albums for your clients that work on iOS, Android and Windows Phone 8+. The Motif Collective, an internet start-up located in Fernandina Beach, Florida just completed its Second International Online Photography Competition.
For a very small entry fee, The Motif Collective allows photographers to take part in photographic competitions where they are independently judged “in the blind” by professional photographers and two of the judges for this month’s competition, Michael Spicer (www.michaelspicer.net) and Stephan R. Leimberg (www.unseenimages.com) were also from Fernandina Beach. The industry does have a number of Photography Competitions but other than the many big “once a year” hosted events by the Big Camera manufacturers there are only a handful of providers supporting smaller worthwhile competitions. The majority of online competitions do not support photographers very well, they charge entry fees without giving out cash awards and those that do only give out a flat rate with no regard for how much in entry fees were collected. The demand for competitions has grown exponentially in the past few years’ right along with the digital photography market and although the exact number is not known it is estimated that over one million paid submissions are made each year. With The Motif Collective winners receive web promotions, press releases and cash awards which are financed by the entry fees. Where competitors are only paying out an average of 0-9% of their entry fees, Motif will always pay out a minimum of 50% of all entry fees to the top three Awards Spots in each competition and for this one they actually paid out 80%. Competitions are hosted monthly and the more competition an event has the larger the prize will be. Right now they just offer one new theme each month with the complete focus of the event on single competition. The winners of the “Landscape Themed” competition were: First and Second Place - Francois Bogaerts (https://500px.com/suske) in Lommel, Belgium for his images titled "Seljalandsfoss" and “Frozen”. Third Place - Janne Kahila (www.jkahilaphotography.com) in Espoo, Finland for his image titled " Tranquilly Divided ". Honoroable Mention - Cliff LaPlant ( www.sierralara.com ) Alpine, California for his image " Reflections in Lake Ediza ". The wining images are displayed here, in The Motif Collective winner’s gallery and are available for purchase at each of the participant’s websites.
